Using Moodle to Teach

Manage students and enhance your teaching at low cost.

Moodle has been adopted widely by the education community at all levels including schools, colleges and Universities.

Moodle enables teachers to develop online curricula and lesson plans, upload resources, administer assignments and quizzes, and create collaborative learning areas. It allows students to engage in learning wherever they have an internet connection.

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help teachers create effective online learning communities.

Moodle can also be called a 'Virtual Learning Environment' (VLE) or 'Learning Platform'.

Moodle provides a range of functionality covering content creation and delivery, communication and collaboration and management, including tracking and assessment tools.

Here are some of the key functions of Moodle:

  • Assignments - for managing homework including the ability for pupils to download/upload homework and for teachers to mark it online
  • Resource links - to webpages and files to help teachers build topics or courses or units of work
  • Forums and chat for interactive discussion of ideas and concepts
  • Quizzes and choices
  • Questionnaire
  • Wikis
  • Content - commercial content can be uploaded  (SCORM packages)
  • Calendars
  • Comprehensive monitoring of all activity

Moodle can be installed for an institution and areas set up for each department or faculty, and for courses within these departments.
